QANplatform Introduces Quantum-Resistant Testnet for EVM Compatibility

QANplatform has announced the launch of the world’s first quantum-resistant blockchain testnet that is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This testnet will allow developers to write smart contracts using any programming language, making it the first EVM-compatible platform with quantum-resistant cybersecurity. Jóhann Polecsak, the co-founder and CTO of QANplatform, explained that centralized authorities can more easily switch their IT security to post-quantum cryptography than blockchain platforms.

The development of post-quantum security measures has become a pressing concern since the launch of the second-largest quantum processor, IBM Condor, in December 2023. Most of the top existing blockchain networks, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, cannot adopt quantum-resistant security measures due to their decentralized nature without experiencing significant negative effects. This is because the pseudonymity of blockchain could make it impossible to differentiate between legitimate owners migrating their funds and hackers stealing them, potentially leading to the loss of billions of dollars.

To address this issue, QANplatform’s new testnet will allow EVM-compatible protocols to test their migration process for a quantum-resistant alternative without risking user funds on the mainnet. This comes after the first European country adopted QANplatform’s quantum-resistant technology in March, highlighting the growing importance of quantum security.

Governments worldwide are already preparing for a future post-quantum era, with the European Commission launching the Quantum Flagship research initiative in 2018. The initiative has a budget of at least 1 billion euros and aims to address the security threats posed by quantum computing. Quantum-resistant technology is crucial because attackers can collect encrypted data with the intention of decrypting it later using more powerful computing methods, such as quantum computers.

Large companies like Apple and Signal are also taking steps to protect their systems against quantum threats. Apple recently unveiled an update that incorporates post-quantum cryptography into its iMessages, becoming one of the first quantum-proof messaging providers. Signal messaging app also introduced a “quantum-resistant” encryption upgrade in 2023. It is essential for post-quantum security to be ahead of the curve because quantum computers with stable qubits will be able to break the current cybersecurity algorithms used by the internet.
