Positive Development: ETC Group Exec Applauds ETF Staking Addition

According to the ETC Group, the inclusion of staking in spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF) applications is a significant milestone. The head of product at ETC Group, Chanchal Samadder, explains that the Ethereum staking aspect is important for ETFs because it determines whether investors receive the price return or the total return of the asset. Ethereum’s proof-of-stake mechanism and network rewards make it similar to dividends in equities, but only shareholders who exercise their voting right are eligible to receive these dividends. Samadder views the addition of staking as a positive development because it provides investors with the complete economic benefits of Ethereum and leads to improved outcomes.

Despite ETC Group’s optimism, the approval of spot Ethereum ETFs by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) remains uncertain. Samadder explains that staking products involve new risks and difficulties and require a deep understanding of the Ethereum blockchain. Without expertise in exchange-traded products (ETPs) and technical aspects of the Ethereum protocol, issuers may potentially harm investor outcomes.

Spot Ethereum ETF filers have been rushing to amend their SEC applications to include staking. For example, Fidelity, a financial services giant, filed an amendment seeking permission to stake a portion of its Ether. Grayscale Investments, the operator of the largest spot Bitcoin ETF, also proposed the addition of staking in its Ethereum ETF application. Samadder speculates that the complexity of staking and the SEC’s rigorous analysis requirements may have contributed to the delay in including staking in ETF applications.

He suggests that structuring a product that involves staking requires a deep knowledge of the Ethereum protocol, ETP mechanics, and the bridge between crypto and traditional capital markets. This process takes time and expertise. There may have been a belief that the SEC was not ready to properly analyze the risks associated with staking.

The inclusion of staking in spot Ethereum ETF applications is seen as a crucial milestone. It allows investors to benefit from the complete economic advantages of Ethereum. The approval of these ETFs remains uncertain due to the new risks and complexities associated with staking and the SEC’s requirements for deep technical analysis.
