Vitalik Buterin Backs TiTok AI for Onchain Image Storage

Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, has recently given his support to a new compression technique called Token for Image Tokenizer (TiTok). This method, not to be mistaken for the popular social media app TikTok, promises significant improvements in image size reduction, making it more suitable for blockchain storage. Buterin emphasized the potential advantages of TiTok on the decentralized social media platform Farcaster, pointing out that “320 bits is basically a hash. Small enough to go on chain for every user.” This innovation could transform the way digital images, including profile pictures (PFPs) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are stored on blockchains.

TiTok’s image compression technology has been developed through collaboration between ByteDance and researchers at Technical University Munich. The method allows images to be compressed into 32 tiny data pieces (bits) while maintaining quality. According to the research paper, TiTok leverages advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to compress a 256×256 pixel image into “32 discrete tokens.” By using a one-dimensional (1D) tokenization framework, TiTok overcomes the limitations of traditional two-dimensional (2D) methods, resulting in more compact and flexible images. This leads to a substantial speed increase in the sampling process — up to 410 times faster than some existing models like DiT-XL/2 — while delivering competitive image generation quality.

The TiTok method employs machine learning and sophisticated AI, particularly transformer-based models, to convert images into tokenized forms. It utilizes region redundancy, identifying and using repetitive information in various parts of an image to minimize the overall data size. The researchers noted that recent advancements in generative models underscore the essential role of image tokenization in creating high-resolution images efficiently. TiTok’s “compact latent representation” offers significantly more efficient and effective outcomes compared to conventional image compression techniques.

Despite the name resemblance, TikTok, the social media platform, has no connection with or endorsement from Buterin. The Ethereum co-founder backing TiTok highlights the credibility and innovative potential of this AI-based image compression method. The new technique diverges from existing 2D vector quantization (VQ) models, which view image data as a two-dimensional grid, by proposing a more streamlined one-dimensional latent sequence. This allows TiTok to represent an image using 8 to 64 times fewer tokens than traditional 2D tokenizers.

The proposed TiTok framework could revolutionize how images are stored and managed on blockchain platforms.
