Ripple, a prominent name in the cryptocurrency world, is strengthening its relationship with the Republic of Georgia by exploring methods to digitize the local economy in collaboration with the National Bank of Georgia (NBG). On a recent visit, Natia Turnava, the acting governor of the NBG, and Varlam Ebanoidze, who heads the bank’s Financial and Supervisory Technology Development Department, engaged in discussions with James Wallis, a key executive from Ripple, with the aim of advancing their cooperation in financial technology and digitalization.
A formal announcement regarding the meeting was made by the Georgian central bank through a social media post on June 8. During the meeting, Wallis, who holds the position of Vice President of Central Bank Engagements at Ripple, introduced Georgian officials to Alistair Brown, a representative from Ripple’s partner firm, EPAM Systems. Wallis expressed his pleasure at returning to Tbilisi and facilitating this important introduction.
EPAM Systems, based in Newtown, Pennsylvania, is a company specializing in software engineering services, digital platform engineering, and digital product design. The firm’s name stands for “Effective Programming for America,” indicating its focus on delivering proficient programming solutions.
The recent discussion is part of an ongoing collaboration between Ripple and the NBG aimed at digitalizing Georgia’s economy. This fresh collaboration builds on a pre-existing partnership wherein Ripple acts as the technological partner for NBG’s pilot project on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), known as the digital lari. The project took a significant step in September 2023 when NBG invited several companies, including Ripple Labs, to participate in the digital lari’s development.
Eventually, Ripple Labs was chosen as the official technology partner for the development of the digital lari. This move underlines Ripple’s influential role in digital currency initiatives, not just in Georgia but globally. The firm’s involvement with other central banks in countries like Colombia, Bhutan, Palau, and Montenegro, in their respective CBDC pilots, highlights its extensive reach and expertise.
